There is a difference between feeling functional and being functional.

Three quick examples:

  1. Spending time on Facebook feels functional, but is it truly functional? When I spend time on Facebook, am I building friendships or merely maintaining acquaintances? Perhaps that’s functional. But an hour goes by so quickly on Facebook — and what have I truly done?
  2. Spending time on Quicken feels functional, but is it truly functional?
  3. Watching television feels functional, but is it truly functional? You know what I think about TV.

All three examples are related to technology. Is technology saving me time — or just providing me a method of passing time, wasting my life, one hour at a time?
