There is a difference between feeling functional and being functional.
Three quick examples:
- Spending time on Facebook feels functional, but is it truly functional? When I spend time on Facebook, am I building friendships or merely maintaining acquaintances? Perhaps that’s functional. But an hour goes by so quickly on Facebook — and what have I truly done?
- Spending time on Quicken feels functional, but is it truly functional?
- Watching television feels functional, but is it truly functional? You know what I think about TV.
All three examples are related to technology. Is technology saving me time — or just providing me a method of passing time, wasting my life, one hour at a time?

Going to the Ohio State Fair is highly functional. A half dozen or so of us are going tomorrow. Here’s your invitation to join us.
